Everything Dental Professionals Need to Know about DirectDental

I’m not going to use this post to bore you with how DirectDental was founded, our mission and all that good stuff. Rather, this is going to be a quick and easy read about how to find work, control your schedule, and what we do on our end to make sure Dental Assistants, Hygienists, and Dental Front Office Personnel are in safe and welcoming offices.

And now, the best part? We have an app! You can download it on the App Store or Google Play and manage your temp shifts right from your phone.

So let’s dive in.

#1 What is DirectDental?

DirectDental is an open marketplace for dental offices to connect directly with dental professionals.

We get a lot of calls from professionals saying, “I signed up but nobody reached out with temp shifts.” But here’s the thing—there’s no middleman. Everything you need is right there on the site and the app.

Offices can request you directly through your profile, and you can search and apply to temp jobs on the days you’re available—all from your phone.

#2 How do I get temp work?

The best way to get temp work is to log in often. This signals our algorithm that you’re active, which boosts how often you show up in office searches. The more visibility you have, the more likely you are to get requested.

If you have a day you’re available and no requests have come through, you can take action:

  • Go to “Search Jobs” on the website or in the app.
  • Enter your position, select “Temp Date,” and choose the day you want to work.
  • You’ll see all available temp jobs for that day. Apply and reach out to the office to secure the shift.

We’ll also email you when temp shifts near you get posted, but with the app, you’ll get notifications straight to your phone so you don’t miss out.

#3 Do you track shifts?

Nope—we don’t track your shifts or charge offices per booking. DirectDental was designed to give dental temps full autonomy over their careers.

If you find an office you love temping at, you can keep working with them or even accept a permanent position without us getting in the way.

That said, you’ll need to track your own work history (for tax purposes). Please don’t call us in January asking for a list of every office you temped with—we won’t have that info.

#4 What do you charge job seekers?

DirectDental is always free for job seekers. Whether you’re applying for permanent roles or picking up extra temp shifts, there’s no cost to you.

#5 How do temps get paid?

The offices pay your directly. When they sign up on DirectDental, they agree to follow labor laws in their state.

Pro tip: Always confirm pay rate, payment method, and pay schedule with the office before your shift. That quick conversation saves headaches later.

You can also use our downloadable timesheet to ensure your hours are accurate.

#6 How do you ensure offices are warm and welcoming?

We can’t guarantee every office will be a perfect fit, but we do have systems in place.

Temps can rate offices after each shift. If an office gets multiple poor ratings, we step in. Repeat offenders can and will be removed from DirectDental.

Reasons offices may be removed include:

  • Repeated complaints about an unfriendly work environment
  • Not paying temps on time
  • Canceling shifts without contacting temps

And we rely on you too—if you have a negative experience, let us know so we can hold offices accountable.

#7 Can temps or applicants be removed from the site?

Yes, the same accountability applies to professionals.

Reasons temps may be removed include:

  • Accepting shifts or interviews and not showing up
  • Harassing or threatening behavior
  • Misrepresenting skills on your profile

Luckily, removals are rare. Most professionals and offices using DirectDental are awesome!
