“You are, and always have been, my dream.”
— Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook

February has a way of making us reflect on the relationships that matter most — and that includes the people you work with every day.

So let me ask you:

Do you truly love your team?
Have you built your dream dental team?

If the answer is “not quite,” that’s okay. Most practices aren’t there yet.

This post is here to help you do two things:

  • Strengthen the team you already have
  • And build the dream team you want, using smarter hiring and better leadership

A quick gut‑check: is your team really thriving?

Ask yourself these questions honestly:

  • Do my patients feel they receive excellent care from everyone on the team?
  • Are all of my employees complaint‑free (no patient complaints, no negative reviews mentioning them)?
  • Does my team feel comfortable coming to me with concerns or feedback?
  • Do I genuinely take good care of my team?
  • Do we enjoy working together?

If you answered yes to all of these, congratulations — you’ve built something special. Go enjoy your day. You’ve earned it.

If not, let’s break down what those “no’s” may be telling you.

If patients aren’t happy, pay attention

If you answered no to either of the first two questions, start here.

When patients don’t feel cared for, or complaints keep popping up, there’s often a pattern behind it. Many times, it comes down to one of two situations:

1. An unmotivated employee

This could be someone who was once great but is now burned out, disengaged, or overwhelmed.

If that’s the case, don’t jump straight to replacement. Start with support.

We walk through exactly how to handle this situation here:

How to Handle an Unmotivated Employee

2. A true problem employee

Sometimes, it isn’t burnout.

It’s negativity. Resistance. Poor attitude. Or behavior that affects patients and coworkers alike.

If that’s what you’re dealing with, waiting rarely makes it better.

One disengaged or toxic team member can quietly drain morale, productivity, and your own energy as a leader.

When it’s clear someone isn’t the right fit, helping them move on is often the kindest option for everyone involved.

If your team doesn’t feel supported, that is fixable

If you answered no to questions 3, 4, or 5, the good news is this:

You don’t need to replace your team.

You need to adjust how you lead it.

Start with something simple but powerful:

Hold real employee reviews — and listen

Ask your team:

  • What’s working?
  • What’s frustrating?
  • Where do they feel unsupported?
  • What could you do better as a leader?

That feedback can be uncomfortable… but it’s also one of the fastest ways to become the kind of manager people want to stay with.

Love your team by protecting them from burnout

Another powerful (and often overlooked) way to show your team you care?

Don’t let them drown when the schedule is full.

Being understaffed is one of the fastest ways to:

  • Increase mistakes
  • Increase tension
  • Increase turnover
  • And decrease patient experience

On high‑production or short‑staffed days, bringing in a temp isn’t a luxury — it’s leadership.

Final thoughts

Loving your team doesn’t mean avoiding hard conversations.

It means:

  • Hiring thoughtfully
  • Leading clearly
  • Addressing problems early
  • Supporting people when they struggle
  • And protecting your culture when someone no longer fits

When you do that, something powerful happens.

Your team feels valued. Your patients feel the difference. And work becomes a place you actually enjoy showing up to.

Here’s to building a dental team you truly love — this Valentine’s Day and all year long.

Smiles!
